BREAKING: NPP Regional Elections Begin Across Ghana as Ashanti Polls Face Court Block

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun its regional executive elections across Ghana, as thousands of delegates vote today to choose new leaders who will oversee the party’s grassroots structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The elections are taking place in 15 of Ghana’s 16 regions today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, while the Western North Region is scheduled to hold its election on Sunday, August 16.

The exercise forms part of the NPP’s wider internal reorganisation following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.

Ashanti election hit by court injunction

One of the biggest developments surrounding the elections is in the Ashanti Region, where the scheduled regional executive election has been thrown into uncertainty following an interim injunction issued by the High Court in Kumasi.

The court order, issued on Thursday, August 13, restrains key NPP officials and the Ashanti Regional Steering Committee from conducting, organising, supervising, facilitating or processing the election.

The development has effectively separated Ashanti from the broader election-day exercise and could delay voting in the region until the legal dispute is resolved.

The Ashanti contest had been expected to attract significant attention, with 34 aspirants competing for 11 regional executive positions and 1,020 delegates expected to vote.

The regional chairmanship race had particularly attracted attention, with Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, and former Bantama MP Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu emerging as the main contenders.

The NPP has also tightened security arrangements around the elections, warning candidates against bringing bodyguards or large groups of supporters to voting centres.

In Greater Accra, officials said hundreds of police officers would be deployed to help maintain order during the exercise.
