BUIPE, SAVANNAH REGION — For many people in Buipe and across the Savannah Region, the proposed 1,500MW Buipe Solar Project is not just another government project on paper.
It is being watched with real interest because of what it could mean for jobs, businesses, electricity supply and the future of the local economy.
But there is one question people are increasingly asking:
Has the project actually started?
The government announced that work on the first 100MW phase was expected to begin in August 2026.
Now that August is already underway, attention is shifting from what was promised to what is actually happening on the ground.
Government said construction would begin in August
The Buipe Solar Project is part of the government's 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+).
In July, Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy Augustus Goosie Tanoh announced that construction of the first 100MW phase was expected to begin this month.
That announcement raised expectations in Buipe and the wider Savannah Region.

What is Ghana planning to build?
The Buipe project is expected to be developed in stages, eventually reaching 1,500MW of solar generation capacity.
The first phase is expected to produce 100MW.
The wider development is also expected to include battery energy storage, which would help manage the variable nature of solar power and improve the reliability of the electricity produced.
The government has estimated the investment at around US$1.45 billion and projected approximately 13,000 jobs from the wider project.
If delivered as planned, the project could make Buipe one of the more important renewable-energy locations in northern Ghana.
Why this matters to Buipe

It is what that figure could bring with it.
A project of this size could create work for engineers, technicians, drivers, contractors, suppliers and other workers.

Will local people actually benefit from the investment?

According to Goosie Tanoh, electricity from the project could potentially be supplied at between 7 and 9 US cents per kilowatt-hour, compared with industrial electricity costs cited at around 18 to 23 US cents per kilowatt-hour.
If that target is achieved, it could make a real difference to businesses.
Manufacturers and agro-processing companies, for example, could potentially operate for longer hours without electricity costs eating so deeply into their operating budgets.
That is exactly the kind of industrial activity the government's 24-hour economy is intended to encourage.
Ghana's stronger cedi could also help

Ghana has recently recorded a notable strengthening of the cedi against the US dollar, a development that can influence the cost of imported machinery, equipment and other inputs.

For a project estimated at about US$1.45 billion, exchange-rate movements are important.

As of August 18, 2026, there has been no fresh official announcement conclusively confirming that physical construction of the first 100MW phase has started.
The government has said construction was expected to begin in August.
