Police Reveal Three Banks Were Targeted in Foiled Labone Attack

ACCRA, Ghana — The Ghana Police Service has disclosed that the suspects involved in Thursday’s violent incident at Labone in Accra were allegedly preparing to attack three banks, not just GCB Bank as initially reported.

According to the Police, the suspected robbery syndicate was targeting GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located within the Labone enclave.

The latest clarification comes after the Police initially reported that they had foiled a robbery attempt at the GCB Bank Labone branch. GCB Bank subsequently denied that any robbery or attempted robbery had occurred at its branch, saying the facility was never breached and that no customer, staff member, funds or property was affected.

Police Receive Intelligence

The Police said they received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, indicating that a gang was preparing to attack the three banks.

A police response team was subsequently deployed to Labone, where officers reportedly spotted the suspects in two vehicles parked close to the banks.

Police said one of the vehicles sped away after the occupants noticed the officers.

The vehicle was pursued, leading to the arrest of a suspect identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant escaped.

The occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to flee and allegedly opened fire at the pursuing officers.

The Police said officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.

Two Vehicles and Weapon Recovered

The Police reported recovering two vehicles during the operation.

They were identified as a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17.

A blow pistol was also reportedly recovered.

The arrested suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the planned attack and identify other members of the alleged syndicate.

The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy, according to the Police.

GCB Maintains Its Branch Was Not Attacked

The latest Police account helps explain the apparent contradiction between the initial robbery report and GCB Bank's subsequent denial.

GCB Bank has maintained that no robbery or attempted robbery took place on its Labone branch premises.

The bank said its branch was never breached and that its customers, employees, funds and property were not affected.

The Police's updated account, meanwhile, describes the incident as an operation to intercept a suspected syndicate allegedly preparing to attack banks in the Labone area.

This means the reported incident did not result in a successful attack on any of the three banks.

Investigation Continues

The Ghana Police Service has commended the officers involved in the operation and thanked members of the public for providing information that assists efforts to prevent and respond to criminal activities.

Investigations are continuing, including efforts to identify the two deceased suspects, locate the escaped suspect and determine the wider activities of the alleged robbery syndicate.
