NDC Maintains ‘Other Youth’ Category as Congress Considers Second Deputy Youth Organiser
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that its existing arrangement for the “Other Youth” category in the ongoing constituency elections remains in force.
The clarification comes just days before the party opens nominations for its 2026 Constituency Executive Elections, with nominations scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 15.
In a statement dated September 12 and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said the decision follows a directive from its National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain the existing status quo regarding the “Other Youth” category.
The party’s clarification is important because the position has been linked to a proposed second Deputy Constituency Youth Organiser role.
According to the NDC, Congress may subsequently ratify the NEC’s decision to designate the “Other Youth” position as a second Deputy Constituency Youth Organiser.
If Congress ratifies the decision, constituency-level youth leadership would have two Deputy Constituency Youth Organisers.
The officer elected under the “Other Youth” category would then enjoy the rights and privileges attached to the position.
For now, however, the NDC has made clear that the current arrangement should be followed during the constituency election process.
The party has therefore directed its structures, officers and members to comply with the NEC directive as the elections proceed.
The NDC has also called on members and the general public to cooperate with the electoral process to ensure that the internal elections are transparent, orderly and credible.
Why the clarification matters
The timing is significant.
The NDC is preparing to open nominations for its 2026 constituency executive elections from September 15. Gonja Pulse has already reported on the party’s opening of nominations for the 2026 constituency executive elections, making the latest clarification particularly relevant to aspirants and party members preparing to participate in the process.
The “Other Youth” issue could therefore become an important consideration for young NDC members deciding whether to contest constituency-level positions.
The development is also part of the wider question of youth participation in political leadership, particularly at the constituency level.
In the Savannah Region, recent developments have highlighted the growing focus on youth leadership and community engagement.
In Central Gonja, for example, the Youth MP for Yapei-Kusawgu and Central Gonja Police strengthen collaboration on youth empowerment, with Hon. Munkaila Tourrick engaging the District Police Command on youth development, community safety and responsible citizenship.
The engagement is another example of how youth leadership is increasingly intersecting with community development and public participation in the region.
For now, however, the NDC says the existing “Other Youth” arrangement remains in force.
What happens next
The immediate focus will shift to the opening of nominations on September 15.
For young members of the NDC, the clarification provides greater certainty about how the “Other Youth” category is to be treated during the nomination and election process.
The important distinction is that the second Deputy Constituency Youth Organiser position has not been presented as finally established yet.
The NDC says Congress may subsequently ratify the NEC’s decision.
That means the current election process will proceed under the arrangement already communicated by the party, while the longer-term status of the proposed second position remains subject to the next stage of the party’s decision-making process.
As nominations approach, attention will now turn to the various constituency positions and the candidates seeking to occupy them, particularly within the youth leadership structure.
The development could therefore become an important issue for NDC youth members across constituencies as the party moves into the next phase of its internal elections.
Gonja Pulse will continue to follow developments around the NDC’s internal elections and their implications for constituencies across Northern Ghana and the Savannah Region.
