Savannah Regional Hospital construction begins as contractors move to site

DAMONGO, SAVANNAH REGION — Construction has commenced on the long-awaited 160-bed Savannah Regional Hospital, with contractors now mobilised to begin work on the project.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the development on Wednesday, October 7, during a sector update by the Ministry of Health.

According to the Minister, contracts have been signed for three new regional hospitals in the Savannah, Oti and Western North Regions, with contractors already moved to the respective sites.

Each facility is expected to have a 160-bed capacity and forms part of a broader government plan to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across Ghana.

The Savannah Regional Hospital project is located at Damongo. Government formally handed over the project site to the contractor on September 25, paving the way for construction to begin.

What the project could mean for Savannah

For residents of the Savannah Region, the development is significant because the new facility is expected to strengthen the region's capacity to provide higher-level healthcare and referral services.

Residents requiring specialised treatment have, in some circumstances, had to travel outside the region for services that are not available locally.

The government says the broader regional hospital programme is intended to bring quality healthcare closer to residents and improve access to specialised services.

However, the announcement of construction is only the beginning.

Questions remain about the project's total cost, completion schedule, specialist departments, staffing and the range of services that will eventually be available to patients.

Beyond the groundbreaking

The key issue for residents will be whether the project progresses from construction to a fully functioning referral facility.

For a region where distance can be a major factor in accessing healthcare, the eventual impact will depend not only on the number of beds but also on the availability of doctors, nurses, diagnostic equipment, theatres, emergency services and other specialist facilities.

The Health Minister said the Savannah hospital is one of three 160-bed regional hospitals being constructed this year, while processes are expected to begin for three additional regional hospitals in 2027.

For now, the contractors are on site.

The next question for Savannah residents is straightforward: when will the hospital be completed and ready to serve patients?

Gonja Pulse will continue to follow the project and track its progress from construction to completion.
